Dance Artist • Brooklyn, NY
Rachel Wyman is a dancer, cowgirl and runner from Walla Walla, WA, currently residing in Brooklyn, NY. She received her B.A. in Dance with a minor in African American Studies from Oberlin College in 2010. In 2006 she began studying West African dance under the tutelage of Adenike Sharpley, and in 2008 appeared in Ms. Sharpley’s dance concert, Misterioso: The Life and Times of Thelonious Monk. In 2008 she undertook an arts practicum in Mali with Antioch Education Abroad, studying folkloric dance for three months with Bintu Fune of Les Ballets Malien. The experience greatly informed Rachel’s “Danceifesto”– she is passionate about dance as a fundamental element of daily living and strives to get down like James Brown on a regular basis. She returned to Mali in 2010 and again in 2011 to continue her studies. Rachel is greatly inspired by Pearl Primus, Brenda Dixon Gottschild, Ronald K. Brown and Josephine Baker. She gives thanks to her parents, the creators of her world, who have been sources of unconditional support and constant inspiration.
